Portland, OR (December 1st, 2023) — On the brink of L.A. Comic Con 2023, Oni Press, a distinguished comic book publisher with multiple Eisner and Harvey Awards, proudly announces a groundbreaking collaboration with SpectreVision. SpectreVision, the renowned production company behind critically acclaimed films like Panos Cosmatos’ “Mandy” and Ana Lily Amirpour’s “A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night,” joins forces with Oni Press to venture into uncharted territories of storytelling through a unique “pop-up” publishing imprint set to debut in 2025.
In a departure from traditional science fiction and horror, the collaboration, titled HIGH STRANGENESS, draws inspiration from documented cases of paranormal phenomena dating back to the mid-20th century. HIGH STRANGENESS promises to navigate the liminal spaces where reality, hallucination, science, and mythology converge, offering a narrative that transcends conventional boundaries.
Daniel Noah, Co-Founder of SpectreVision, reflects on the project, stating, “Accounts from experiencers of the paranormal suggest a vast, interconnected narrative unfolding at the farthest reaches of human experience – from UFOs, to cryptid sightings, to patterns of synchronicities that point to an invisible architecture underlying our reality.” Noah, himself an experiencer, expresses a profound commitment to exploring this extraordinary space in collaboration with Oni Press.
Elijah Wood, Co-Founder of SpectreVision, notes that comics are uniquely suited to delve into the wide-ranging spectrum of paranormal phenomena. He emphasizes the medium’s limitless possibilities in giving shape to accounts that defy traditional explanations.
Hunter Gorinson, President & Publisher of Oni Press, shares the mutual fascination that Oni and SpectreVision have with the extremities of human understanding. He states, “Reality is thin around the edges… and if we press hard enough in exactly the right places, it just might shatter.” Through the powerful lens of comic storytelling, the collaboration aims to explore multiple manifestations rooted in a common understanding.
Adding a unique perspective to the project is Jim Perry, a Creative Consultant, podcaster, and producer of the acclaimed audio documentary podcast, Euphomet. Perry’s extensive knowledge of anomalous phenomena will provide valuable insights to the creative team.
SpectreVision founders Elijah Wood and Daniel Noah, alongside Oni Press President & Publisher Hunter Gorinson and Editor-in-Chief Sierra Hahn, will divulge more details about HIGH STRANGENESS during an exclusive panel presentation at L.A. Comic Con on Sunday, December 3rd, at 12 Noon PT in Room 304. For additional information, visit ComicConLA.com.
