How to Draw Johnny Depp
One of the world’s most popular actors. He is best known for his roles like Edward Scissorhands, Captain Jack Sparrow, Sweeney Todd, and Mad Hatter in the recreation of Alice in Wonderland. Of course, there are way more flicks that I didn’t name, and I will be sure to drop a few more character roles he has played. Who is this pop icon you ask?
Well, his full birth name is John Christopher Depp II, but we all know him as Johnny Depp. One of the things he is famous for is his good looks, and how he always seems to age slightly. Even though he is now forty-seven, his baby-like face still looks like he is in his thirties.
But where did this hot hunk come from? Johnny was born in Owensboro Kentucky to Betty Sue Palmer, and John Christopher Depp Sr. What most people don’t know about this talented star, is that as a child he lived a very troubled life. His family took Depp and his two sisters and moved around the United States at least twenty different times before they finally settled down in Miramar Florida in the year of 1970.
This would make Johnny seven years old. Eight years later, his parents divorced, and all the stress of life and his own insecurity lead him to start inflicting wounds on his body, or self mutilate which left him with eight different scars, and each one holds meaning. Depp said in an interview one time that his self inflicted injuries was like writing in a journal. He also explains how it is the same thing as someone getting a tattoo, because every time you scar your body with ink, each design means something. Besides that shocking news, let’s talk about those looks of his, shall we?
For a while, I have always wondered what sort of heritage flowed through his veins. Was is french, Indian, Irish, German, or what? Well, the answer was pretty much what I had expected. His ancestry consists of German, Irish, and yes, Cherokee Indian. Believe it or not, but the acting wasn’t his first known talent, instead, it was music. He started getting into the art of music when his mother bought him a guitar at the age of twelve years old.
Soon after, he started playing in various bands. He even dropped out of school to fulfill his dreams of becoming a rock star. His redirection from rock and roll star to famous actor came about when his then-wife a make-up artist, introduced him to Nicolas Cage. Cage told Depp that instead of pursuing a career in music, he should work at becoming an actor instead. I guess you could say that his big break came when he was cast in a television series called “21 Jump Street” which used to air on the Fox network.
Soon after, he was given a role in a series called “Blowfish”, and it was then that Depp went from unrecognized, to teen idol. Unfortunately for teens across the globe, Johnny found that being a teen idol was annoying because he felt like he was being displayed or sold as a product, and that was not what he signed up for. So, instead of going for gigs for television series, he would only try and get work for movies, and the roles he would play would have to be something he liked that was right for him as a person and actor. Can you guess what movie role Depp starred in first?
If you said Nancy’s boyfriend in Nightmare on Elm Street, you’re right. After that, he was given another role in Oliver Stones movie Platoon. From then on Johnny Depp’s career took off. He started landed roles in Tim Burton’s films whether it be a physical actor or a voice actor. Some Burton flicks that you can see Depp playing roles in are Edward Scissorhands, Sweeney Todd, Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie, and the Chocolate Factory, The Corpse Bride, and Alice in Wonderland. Now some of my favorite movies starring Depp are flicks such as Blow, The Ninth Gate, Cry Baby, Benny & Joon, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Donnie Brasco, and of course, Once Upon a Time in Mexico.
No matter what the film may be, he always knows how to bring a certain comical appeal to the screen whether he is in a serious role, or providing voice talents with computer-generated films like The Corpse Bride. Well, that just about does it for me, and for this tutorial description on “how to draw Johnny Depp”, step by step. I will be back later with some more drawing fun so stay tuned in to see what they are. Peace out everyone and have fun drawing.
Start sketching out Depp by drawing a circle for the head, and then another outline for the shape of his face. Add the facial guidelines like so, and then move to the next step.
Now start sketching out the actual shape of his face, starting with the jawline and chin. Move onto his lips, and then the nose, eyes, and brows.
Look at what you will be doing here. His hair has always been long, which means you will start sketching out his front bangs. Fill in the brows, and then add the lower lip. Finish the eyes, add the nostrils, and then be sure to put in some crease lines between his brows.
Here is where you will begin your shading. Start adding this shading around the eyes, inside the pupils, along the cheeks, and in around the lips. This shading will add texture and definition as you see here. And since he is also known for having a scruffy face, you will need to draw in some facial hair including the mustache, and chin beard. Add some more shading around the tip of his nose and nostrils.
For your last drawing step, you will first need to erase the lines and shapes, and then begin sketching in his hairstyle. Take your time, and do not rush through this step. Add the strand lines, shading to the top of his skull, and then his neck and shirt.
When you are all done, your famous actor should look like the sketch you see here. If you want you can add some color, or you can leave him as a sketched image. If you took your time, your drawing of Johnny Depp should be great. Now you know How to Draw Johnny Depp.
