Poker is one of the games with a perfect ‘from grass to grace’ story. What was once played only in smoky bars and taverns is now in fancy tournaments. But how so, you may ask?

Many factors have contributed to the rise of the ancient game, especially the shift to the online space. The game has now become really popular, having over 100 million online players worldwide.

In this article, we’ll explore the history and development of online poker, focusing on key milestones. We will also look at the technological advancements and cultural shifts that have shaped online poker into what it is today.

The origins of poker

Poker beginnings theories

The origin of poker is not certain since there are several theories attached to it. One theory suggests that it came from a Persian game called ‘As Nas’ in the 10th century.

Another proposes that it evolved from a Spanish card game, ‘Juego de las Oca’, in the 15th century. There is also a theory that links it to France, from a game called ‘Poque’ in the 16th century.

As if that’s not enough, many believe it began in America in the 19th century in saloons along the Mississippi River. All in all, it is possible that the game developed over time through a combination of all these theories.

The rise in popularity

Poker quickly spread in the US as part of their daily entertainment and culture and wasslowly adopted by different cultures beyond.

By around the 20th century, poker had become common even in private clubs and one of the people’s favorite card games.

In the 1990s, the spread of the internet rose, gradually transitioning the world to the digital space.

Not long after, online poker followed suit, with the first real-money online poker being launched in 1998. Just like that, a new level was unlocked: people could play poker from the comfort of their homes.

Some challenges

In the beginning, online poker faced some challenges. The internet wasn’t as fast back then, and its reach was limited. The online poker sites also had several technical problems since they were just starting.

On top of that, online transactions were not considered very safe at the time. Anyway, through all that, online poker continued to develop, working through the challenges till the massive boom.

The boom era in the 2000s

The 2000s were the time for online poker to rise and shine. The game became very popular, and different poker sites flourished.

Tournaments were shown on TV, with shows like the World Poker Tour and the World Series of Poker attracting the masses. This game, which is a blend of skill, luck and strategy, was hitting the headlines.

The 2003 victory

In 2003, Chris Moneymaker won the World Series of Poker (WSOP) after qualifying through an online poker site. You are probably wondering why that is important in the online poker story – read on.

His victory led to a sudden increase in interest in online poker, seeing that Chis was a seemingly ordinary man. Then poker stopped being just for seasoned players, and almost everyone with an internet connection decided to try it.

The rise of mobile gaming

As smartphones became more common, mobile gaming started gaining root. Around 2010, poker operators began developing poker apps as they saw the need for mobile-friendlyplatforms.

Since then, there have been major advancements in those apps as they work towards giving you better gaming experiences. Poker games have become very accessible because over 70% of the world are smartphone users

Now you have poker in your pocket, and you can play a quick hand from wherever and at any time. The apps are also curated to accommodate different people with different skills and preferences so as to reach a wider audience.

This variety ensures there is something for everybody, from fast-paced poker to tournaments.

Real-time interaction

Also, live stream services for poker games have contributed to the diversity. You can learn how to play as you watch other pros on platforms like YouTube and Twitch. These streaming services have helped bridge the gap between beginners and professionals in the field worldwide.

Conclusion

The evolution of poker has been a resilient journey. From the days in taverns to its current digital presence, the game has truly grown. Several factors have contributed to the journey, most especially technology. As more advancements are being made, the expected growth of a CAGR of 12% from 2022 to 2030 seems attainable.
