Earthquake in Turkey and Syria
February 6, 2023, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit southern and central Turkey as well as northern and western Syria, with the epicenter located 37 km (23 mi) west-northwest of Gaziantep. The earthquake caused severe shaking, with some areas in Hatay Province experiencing a maximum Mercalli intensity of XII (Extreme). A second earthquake, measuring 7.7 Mw, occurred at 13:24 and was centered 95 km (59 mi) north-northeast of the first one. The earthquakes resulted in widespread damage and tens of thousands of fatalities.
