Rafiqun Nabi

Posted by A R On October - 30 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

2009-06-10__img_4097Rafiqun Nabi — aka Ranabi, one of the leading artists of the country, practices experimental realism in his own distinctive style. He has combined the main motifs of the subcontinent with his unique lines. Romanticism and impressionism are mingled in his presentations in various media such as watercolours, acrylic and woodcut. In his predominantly figurative works, what he usually does, he has devoted himself simultaneously to using lines and colours in observing the material world.

Nature always provides ’sequels’ (transition over a period) of changing colours. In the backdrop of vibrant nature; interrelationship between human beings, animals and birds is a major characteristics of Nabi’s canvases. He seizes the rhythmic expressions of the flora and fauna of a transitory moment with the vibrant use of watercolours.

Apart from the eternal drama of nature, contemporary events are also portrayed in Nabi’s works. His popular cartoon-character Tokai functions as a spectator of the disorders of the society. Through Tokai, he satires the contemporary politics and follies.

On his style Rafiqun Nabi says the Star Online that as drawing is his strength his canvases are figurative and it is the subject of the canvas that leads him to select the colour as well as composition. And he has no fascination for any particular colour.

The Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts of Dhaka University Professor Rafiqun Nabi evaluates that art in Bangladesh has significant development during the last few years.

For his wonderful contribution, Nabi has won acclaims. He is the winner of several prestigious awards including Ekushey Padak (1993), Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Award (1989) and Promoters Prize Inter Graphic-80, Berlin, Germany.

Shishir Bhattcharjee: Caricaturing society

Posted by A R On October - 30 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

2009-07-18__sheshirNoted artist Shishir Bhattacharjee has achieved nationwide popularity as a cartoonist. His cartoons published in the Bangla daily the Prothom Alo satire the contemporary society, especially the political canvass.

Shishir loves his dual identities as an artist and cartoonist, considering both of the mediums as his own creations. The idea of drawing caricatures came into the mind of the seasoned artist during the protest against the rule of the then military dictator in 1990s.

Shishir became so fascinated with caricature that he has taken it as part of his routine work. But sometimes he finds the job boring and disturbing because of some unwanted interventions. Shishir, however, wants to continue cartoons.

Shishir Bhattacharjee also Told the Star Online that after a break for a while he is now doing his paintings and drawings along with caricatures.

He has always deliberately maintained a difference in styles between his caricatures and paintings and drawings. As a painter, Shishir wants to work on a big canvas dealing with many figures.

Associate Professor of the Faculty of Fine Arts of Dhaka University, Shishir Bhattacharjee also has his own observations on the current trends of art in Bangladesh and the young artists as well.

Statement of Iranian Cartoonists on the 9th Tehran Cartoon Biennale

Posted by A R On October - 30 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

cartoon
cartoon1The recent presidential election in Iran and its aftermath found huge international coverage and attention.
As you may know, there was a huge and unprecedented turn-out in balloting, which was a sign of the Iranian people’s will to reform the current situation of the country. But the aftermath of the election was so desperately annoying that no free soul can ever close his eyes on it.

The same is true for the cartoonists. They have always accompanied people in portraying pains and in offering criticisms, in denouncing violence and in promotion of justice; and they have always called for peace. The same is true for the time being. The cartoonists feel an obligation to stand by people who have faced such unkindness.

We the cartoonists have always tried to laugh people out of pain and pressure. But how can one witness killing of brothers and sisters and still remain silent?

In such a situation, the 9th Tehran cartoon Biennale is on the way. Due to the post-election events, the cultural joy has totally disappeared from Iranian society. So we don not see any real interest in holding such a Biennale. In the current situation, we see our responsibility in a different view which does not necessarily include laughing and making laugh.

Due to this fact, we the undersigned cartoonists, declare that we would not participate in this international festival. Previously, the festival has been held by cooperation and sympathy of professional Iranian cartoonists but this time, we would not cooperate or participate.

Hadi Heidari, a world-renowned Iranian cartoonist who contributes to several reformist newspapers, was arrested in Tehran on October 22.

According to Reporters Without Borders, Heidari was one of several participants in a religious ceremony in honor of political prisoners, held in the home of Shehabeldin Tabataba, one of the prisoners close to the reformist party.

Reports claim that some detainees were released the next day, but about a dozen, including Heidari, were transferred to Evin prison.

Heidari heads the website Persian Cartoons (www.haditoons.com) and was the cultural editor of the banned daily Etemad-e Melli. Editor of the newspaper, Mohammad Ghochani, a member of its editorial staff, Fayaz Zahed, and website editor, Mohammad Davari, are all still in prison.

Toonpool, a worldwide cartoonists’ community joined by artists from 140 nations, sent a letter to the Iranian embacy in German to request verification of the arrest, as well as information about the charges that Heidari is facing.

I’ll post more information as I receive it.

Ranan Lurie appears twice in the same Guinness Book of World Records, representing two very different categories.
He holds for 20 consecutive years the title of “The most widely syndicated political cartoonist in the world,” as well as
being a scion to the oldest recorded living family today: “His family is directly descended from the royal house of the
biblical King David and can trace its genealogy back to the 10th century BC.”

So far he has published 10 cartoon art books, 1 novel, won 22 national and international awards, had 17 exhibitions, sculpted
28 statues, painted more than 2,000 oil/acrylic paintings, wrote about 1,200 articles, and created more than 11,000 political cartoons.

Ranan Lurie was nominated by the Republic of Cyprus for the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize: “I am writing this letter to sponsor the
